Dr. Weil Diet
Dr. Weil’s diet revolves largely around anti-inflammatory foods. He suggests that you try to eat a wide variety of foods, and as much fresh food as possible. Dr. Weil tries to limit his intake of fast food and processed food. The most important foods to eat, according to Dr. Weil, are lots of fruits and vegetables.
Dr. Weil believes that the average adult should consume between 2,000 and 3,000 calories a day, although women, smaller people, and those who are less active will require fewer calories. If your weight stays fairly consistent, you’re eating the right amount of calories per day. Dr. Weil’s recommendation for daily calorie distribution is 40 to 50 percent carbohydrates, 30 percent from fat, and 20 to 30 percent from protein. He recommends including all three of these dietary compounds in every meal.
Dr. Weil believes that with a 2,000 calorie per day diet, you should be consuming between 160 and 200 grams of carbs, 67 grams of fat, 80 to 120 grams of protein, and about 40 grams of fiber a day. In terms of carbohydrates, Dr. Weil believes you should stick with foods like beans, brown rice, bulgur wheat, sweet potatoes, and winter squashes. Weil suggests reducing your consumption of saturated fats like butter and cream, and instead using extra-virgin olive oil. In terms of the fats you should consume, Dr. Weil suggests avocados and nuts, along with many seafood options like salmon, sardines packed in water or olive oil, black cod or herring. In fact, Dr. Weil suggests decreasing your consumption of animals generally across the board, except for seafood. Even cheese and yogurt should be organic and high quality. He also suggests omega-3 fortified eggs, hemp seeds, flaxseeds, or if nothing else, a fish oil supplement. For proteins, Dr. Weil suggests vegetable proteins, particularly from beans like soybeans and whole-soy foods.
Another tip for choosing the right vegetables is simply trying to make your plate as colorful as possible. Variety is key. Eating a wide variety of berries is also suggested. Dr. Weil also believes in eating lots of vegetables in the cabbage-family.
In terms of alcohol, Dr. Weil suggests reaching for red wine if anything at all. Dark chocolate (minimum 70 percent cocoa content) can also be eaten in moderation.
