If you’re really looking to work your glutes and make rapid progress, these are the ankle weights for you. The reason for this is that they’re much heavier than other ankle weights. However, this set of ankle weights is also adjustable so you can add and take away weight as you please. The heaviest setting for these weights is 10 pounds on each ankle. You can adjust these ankle weights by 2 pound increments, letting you set them to as light as 2 pounds, and as heavy as 10 pounds. Heavier weights are not recommended for running, but rather for doing exercises like leg lifts and donkey kicks. These are great exercises to build muscle and tone your glutes while sitting in front of the TV.  Lighter weights are better for regular use, such as when you’re doing chores around the house or going for a walk. This weight set may not be as ideal for those with skinny legs and ankles.

What customers are saying:

These are a great product. Really effective if you’re doing workouts like leg lifts. I wouldn’t recommend these for running. But if you’re looking to gain muscle, these are the weights for you. Although some skinny customers have complained about them not working for them, I’ve had absolutely no problem—and my legs and ankles are VERY skinny! So not sure what other customers are saying. These work great, and if you’re on a budget, you can’t beat them!

Let’s just get this out of the way: these are the ankle weights that are used by Victoria’s Secret Angels.

These ankle weights are super useful because of their easily adjustable strap and snug fit that prevents them from rotating around your ankle while you’re trying to use them. And as mentioned above, these are the ankle weights that the Victoria’s Secret Angels wear. If they’re good enough for the “Angels,” you know they’re great quality and do what they’re designed to do. These ankle weights come in 1 pound, 2 pounds,  5 pounds, and 8 pounds. These weights can be used on your ankles or your wrists. They’re also great for women with narrow legs, ankles, and wrists.

What customers are saying:

I’m super impressed by these weights. Not only do they fit very snug, but they also look quite nice. I’m not embarrassed to wear these out in public when I’m going for walks and jogs. The velcro is strong and durable. They’re great for wearing around the house while doing chores and whatnot. I also love that they actually fit me since I’m very petite and have thin limbs, and these still fit snug as a bug!

If you’re looking to wade slowly into the ankle weights game and don’t want to drop a lot of money on a pair just yet, try these extremely economical weights! These weights come in 1 pound, 2 pounds, 2.5 pounds, 3 pounds, and 5 pounds. While this particular pair may not be the most easy on the eyes, they’re certainly easy on the wallet. These weights are soft and don’t chafe, and come with an adjustable Velcro strap to keep them fitting snug.

What customers are saying:

These weights were fairly comfortable at first, but don’t last too long. The velcro started shedding and they don’t stay on properly if you’re trying to jog with them. If you’re looking to use them for leg lifts, I suppose that would be the best because you’re not moving around as much. Basically, you get what you pay for. These are good if you’re looking to try out ankle weights, but their quality is reflected in their price. Personally, I think that if you get these expecting to wade into using ankle weights, you may end up thinking ankle weights are all horrible and never try anything of better quality that may have actually worked for you. Just spend the extra $20 for something of higher quality.

Best Ankle Weights for Dancers

Using ankle weights while training as a dancer is fairly common practice in many dance schools. The idea behind using ankle weights as a dancer is that they can help improve your hip strength and make certain moves easier. Some dancing coaches however believe that the use of ankle weights can actually lead to a sore hip. So ankle weights should be used with caution as a dancer, and if they start causing more problems then they’re solving, discontinue their use.

If you are going to use ankle weights as a dancer, which weights are the best?

Their lighter weight and snug comfortable fit make Gaiam fitness ankle weights a great choice for dancers. They’re also a perfect fit if you’re looking to strap on some weights and go about your business, letting the weights do the work.

What customers are saying:

I like these particular ankle weights because of how light, comfortable, and easy they are to use. They don’t get in the way or anything. My daughter uses them for dance practice and swears by them. I’ve personally just been using them daily while going about my usual routines, cleaning the house and whatnot. Then, I put them on before doing my step exercises. Another great use is putting them on while watching TV and doing leg lifts. Although they’re only 2.5 pounds, it adds a whole new dimension to the workout.

Best Ankle Weights for Physical Therapy

Many people use ankle weights for physical therapy to solve issues like hamstring pulls, or rolled knees. That’s because as you move further into the healing process, you may need to add some additional resistance to your movements to really strengthen those injured body parts. If you’re looking to use ankle weights for physical therapy, this is the best pair for you.

The Thera-Band is aptly named as an ankle weight that can be used for physical therapy. This weight is extremely comfortable and snug around the ankle, and doesn’t weigh too much. After all, if you’re using your weights for physical therapy, you don’t want anything too heavy or clunky, as this could end up making your injury worse. The Thera-Band weights are designed with a soft terrycloth interior to help soak up moisture and prevent chaffing. And with an easily adjustable strap, these weights are easily customized. These weights are available in 1 pound per weight, 1.5 pounds per weight, or 2.5 pounds per weight.

What customers are saying:

I’ve been using the 1.5 pounds weight set in my physical therapy to try and improve the condition of my knee after I injured it playing basketball. I didn’t use weights at first, but after my condition began to improve, I needed to add some extra resistance. I think about this in the same way that you may use a resistance band to do ankle exercises after you roll your ankle. These weights have been working out great for my knee, and I can feel my strength returning pretty much immediately after performing my daily exercises. I like this brand of weights in particular as they’re not clunky or uncomfortable. They fit well, feel comfortable, and get the job done.

The empower ankle and wrist weights are a number one best seller for a reason. They’re perfect for beginners as they let you adjust their weight by increments of 1/2 pounds. What customers are saying:

I simply love this weight set! Normally the weights that allow you to add or take away weight bars to adjust their heaviness end up being clunky and slide around your ankles. This is the first set of ankle weights of this design that doesn’t give me this problem. They’re snug fitting and extremely comfortable. I guess that’s why these weights are best sellers! If you’re looking for weights and don’t want to limit yourself to any particular weight, I would highly recommend picking up a pair of Empowers. I’ve started using them for my jogs as well as for daily stuff like house work so I can tone on the go!

Best Ankle Weights for Gymnastics

Ankle weights are a great tool to use as a gymnast, as they can help you build strength when practicing exercises on the rings, parallel bars, flat ground, and more. Trying to hold that L-sit position on the rings? Strap on this pair of ankle weights to add more resistance, so that the next time you try this maneuver without the weights, it will become much easier.

This pair of ankle weights is the perfect companion for the gymnast who is looking to increase their strength and sharpen their technique. They come with an easily adjustable strap that allows them to custom fit to any build and body type. These weights are soft and comfortable, built with neoprene padding and reinforced stitching that will help them last long. And if you’re using these weights for nighttime jogging, they will keep you visible with a reflective, glow in the dark line. The SHOUNg ankle weights come in 1 pound, 2 pounds, 3 pounds, 4pounds, 5 pounds, 6 pounds, 8 pounds, and 10 pounds. No matter what weight you’re looking for, SHOUNg has got you.

What customers are saying:

I love these weights. I just have to get something important out of the way quick: the “5 pound” weights are actually 2.5 pounds each! So if you’re looking for 5 pounds on each ankle, get the “10 pound” set. And if you’re looking for 1 pound on each ankle, get the “2 pound” set, etc. Aside from that, these weights are super easily adjusted, comfortable, and do the trick. The material is super breathable which is nice. I’ve been using these weights to practice certain handstand maneuvers to increase the amount of time I can stay in various handstand positions, and after a week, i’ve already been able to increase my holding times by 15 – 20 seconds. Super impressive! They’re also fantastic for L sits on the parallel bars to help build ab strength. I’d definitely recommend these weights to other gymnasts.

This set of 2 pound ankle weights are a great fit for basketball players given their small and discrete fit, which wraps tightly around the ankles and doesn’t slide around when performing jump maneuvers. This is thanks to the D-ring and huge Velcro band that allow for easy adjustments that don’t slip. With interlocking stitching and a premium quality neoprene material, these weights are designed to last year-over-year. The middle stitching on these weights also keeps the weight distribution extremely even. These weights come in 1 pound, 1.5 pounds, 2 pounds, 3 pounds, 4 pounds, and 5 pounds.

What customers are saying:

These ankle weights are fantastic. I’ve been struggling to find ankle weights that I can be active in so I can use them for jogging and basketball practice, but most of the other brands out there I’ve tried ends up rubbing my ankle and chaffing me due to poorly situated Velcro. The Velcro on these ankle weights is perfect, and I’ve never had a problem with rubbing or chafing. The weight is evenly distributed, and they’ve been seeming to help me improve my jump shots, which is nice. I wish that these weights listed their weight somewhere on them because I feel like I might forget in the future when I’m trying to upgrade to a heavier size. But that’s not that big a deal. Overall I really like these and would buy them again/recommend them.

How to Choose a Weight That’s Right for You

To choose a weight that’s right for you, simply consider how difficult you currently find your workout routines without the weights. Are you an older person, for whom even fairly mild exercising takes a lot of effort, and who has more sensitive bones and joints? In this case, go for a 1 or 2 pound weight. By contrast, are you a young person who already does a lot of intensive exercising and has no trouble with bone or joint pain? In this case, go for a 4 or 5 pound weight. Also keep in mind that if you’re looking to build your muscles out, you’re better off with a heavier weight that will increase resistance but with which you will be able to do less reps. Alternatively, if you’re looking to tone your muscles, you can use a lighter weight and increase your reps.

The weight you choose will also depend on what kinds of exercises you’re looking to do. If you’re trying to use these weights to do leg lifts and actual exercises, say, while watching TV, go for a heavier weight. If however you’re simply looking to throw on ankle weights to wear all day long while going about your daily routines to tone your glutes on the go, try a lighter weight.

There’s no science to it—simply go with whatever if comfortable for you. The best weight is one that challenges you and gives you a noticeable burn after using them for a while, but not so heavy as to be cumbersome and drag you down.
